Fun Facts - Lewes Bonfire Celebrations

« Speak Your Truth : Poem

Burnt At The Stake »

The figures below are very rough estimates on my part, and are not to be taken as gospel, but are there purely to give an idea of the size and scale of the Lewes Bonfire Celebrations.

There are six Lewes Bonfire Societies, between them they will have around 3,500 members out on the night, and joining them there will be around 20 invited Bonfire Societies with around 500 members, then there will be around 18 Bands or Drum Corps with around 450 players. Which gives a total of 4,450 bodies in the ranks at a guess.

There will be 30 plus processions during the night, intermingling with each other through the narrow streets of Lewes with the Bonfire Night Celebrations starting around 5.00 pm and finishing about 1am.

Around 26,000 torches will be burnt during the night, using the formula of 6.5 torches per person, which will have used around 2,000 gallons of paraffin for torch dipping.

Around 6,000 pints of fluid will be drunk by the Bonfire Society members alone, based on each one consuming three half pint cans or bottles of coke, beer or other poison, probably way out on this one!

Around £600,000 worth of Bonfire Costumes will be on display each taking between six to 12 months to make.

Six Firework Displays with around 20,000 spectators.
