Hellingly Hospital Sussex - Lewes Bonfire Night Celebrations

Not much for me to say really that has not already been said before about Hellingly Hospital as it has been well documented elsewhere over the years, except maybe to mention that the hospital opened on July 20th, 1903 and was known then as the East Sussex County Asylum before re-branding itself to “Hellingly Hospital” Same contents but different packaging! But I have to admit that it does sound more PC than the East Sussex County Asylum, “Asylum” evokes helplessness, sadness, terror, loneliness and suicide thoughts.
Every time I use to go there in my lorry driving days thirty odd years ago to make a delivery which was once a week, I would have creepy thoughts whilst driving along that never ending, beautiful sweeping drive, flanked either side by Rhododendrons, Trees and other Flowers depending on the season because I have in the past had some personal issues with myself and with the so called rehabilitated Hellingly Hospital inmates there.
You only have to watch any of the following movies called One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, The Green Mile or The Shining to see where I am coming from, and the entire main building was vacated and closed in 1994. It then took 20yrs of red tape to transform the East Sussex County Asylum Hellingly Hospital site into the Roebuck Park of today. Lets just hope the new residents there know what their houses are sitting on, It wasn’t called “Hell In Gly” for no reason and there is some weird shit left in that Chapel!
The East Sussex County Asylum Hellingly Hospital as such is no longer there anymore except rubble. Only four or five outbuildings remain within the new Roebuck Park Estsate, the pics of two that we were able to freely and legally gain entry into are below which includes the once beautiful chapel. So thats all folks now and an end of an era or two for Hellingly Hospital. God Bless. I took only photos and left only my footprints.
