Disused Lime Kiln Streat - Lewes Bonfire Night Celebrations

Was out and about having a ramble on the Foot of the Sussex Downs one Sunday afternoon working of my Roast Dinner and came across these abandoned derelict farm buildings in Streat near Lewes. Decided to have a mooch and I noticed some flint and brickwork in the undergrowth, At first I thought it was a tunnel which had me puzzled,  but on closer inspection I realised it was an old Lime Kiln on top of a disused Chalk Pit.

It is actually in very good condition considering the age of it (1850s) and knowing the area, I believe it was only a small scale Lime Kiln for agricultural use which would have be used as a disinfectant for livestock and a soil conditioner rather than for building. There was the large scale chalk pit in Offham and Lewes that served that purpose back then. The black and white drawing below was pinched from this excellent Lime Kiln Website. I took only photos and left only my footprints.

Footnote. . .

Since uploading this post and images, I couldn’t help but notice a V formation of trees further up the hill behind the old farm buildings and disused Lime Kiln in some of the images. I was very puzzled at first but it turns out that it is a plantation of trees in celebration of Queen Victoria`s Golden/Diamond Jubilee in 1887/1897, Cant believe I missed it first time round but I found and old 1897/1897 or early 1900 pic here.

Sorry about the sketchy information but it is the best I can do, I have posted the old pic that I found below and a pic from as near the same spot as I could work out in 2014 below that. There is at least a hundred year gap between the two pics, but one can tell that both pics are of the same place.
