A Tom Wheeler Poem : South Street Juvenile Bonfire Society (SSJBS)
We are a Society with good intent,
We know how to get the pounds, shillings and pence.
We’ve boys and girls good with their boxes,
Harmless as doves, but cunning as foxes.
We are a Society with good intent,
We have a Committee to see how the money is spent.
We pay our way, as along we go,
We are THE Society that the public know.
We are a Society with good intent,
And so the ‘East Sussex News’ our Balance Sheet is sent.
And there to the Hospital our surplus we give,
To help some poor soul that they might live.
We are a Society with good intent,
Now the BOROUGH BOYS see where our balance is sent.
And that Committee decided to do the same,
To help heal the sick and the lame.
We are a Society with good intent,
Now the CLIFFE Society see where the Borough balance went.
So they said to themselves, if we want to bear their good name,
We shall have to do the same.
We are a Society with good intent,
Boys and girls we ask that your shillings be sent.
So that your name may be put down,
To become a member of the youngest Society of the town.
